Blogging For Beginners

From www.successfulblogging.com

Ileane Smith:

“Great question. When I started blogging it was purely by accident so I didn’t have any goals in mind. I didn’t know much about social media either so I just fumbled my way around trying to figure out how to use WordPress. It took a few months for me to realize that having a blog is a big responsibility.

My audience grew quickly and I could see that the people who visited my blog or watched my YouTube videos were getting a lot of value out of the content I was producing. I was making an impact on my community and people started turning to me for answers when they needed to solve their problems with blogging and social media management. After about 2 years or more it dawned on me.

I was making the same mistake that many of the top bloggers and content creators make when they start out – I wasn’t building an email list!

Oh well, you know what they say. Live and learn. If anyone want to subscribe to my list now they can head over to Basic Blog Tips and grab a free social media traffic report along with some other exclusive goodies. They will find that I’m still the go-to blogger when they need a helping hand!”

How You Can Build Community on the Web and Optimize Toward Success | Black Enterprise

From www.blackenterprise.com

Ileane Smith, known in social media circles as Ms. Ileane, is founder of Basic Blog Tips (BBT), a site that seeks to inform consumers about how to reach their blogging goals and have fun along the way. Based in Philadelphia, she is talks regularly with many early adopters, innovators and leaders in the field of SEO, blog tips and monetization. Because she functions in a community of game-changing, new media influencers and has built a business centered on engagement, we met up with her to learn about the role of engagement in building her business.

BlackEnterprise.com: How did BBT get started?

Ileane Smith: I actually started blogging in 2009 by accident. My daughter Nikki started a free WordPress blog. I thought I was signing up to follow her blog, but it turned out that I was actually signing up for my own blog.

Once I realized what I’d done, I got excited about being able to put my thoughts out on the web for everyone to read. Even today I’m amazed by how empowering it is to have a blog. In those days my biggest challenge was finding good tutorials and instructions for how to navigate the dashboard and other technical aspects of blogging. I found myself hunting for tutorials on “YouTube University” and its support forums, like Lisa Irby’s Website Babble. I had not begun to think about how an engaged community supports the bottom line.

Ileane Smith:

I've always been a fan of Black Enterprise Magazine so you can imagine that I'm absolutely thrilled to be featured here in this interview on their site. It is certainly a dream come true!

1. Who are you?

I’m Ileane and I own Basic Blog Tips, one of the most popular blogs on the web covering blogging, social media and YouTube. My bio reads: Blogger, Podcaster, YouTuber, Social Media Diva.

2. What's your motto?

I’m here to learn, to teach, and to connect! This was the tagline of my very first blog and it still holds true today.

3. Why are you on Tsu?

It’s an interesting place to hang out. I heard about it and then I got the nudge from you, so I decided to move it up on my to do list. I find it very delightful so far. I use it the same way as I do Instagram but I love that it works just as well from desktop as from mobile and there’s no limitation on posting links. Besides, I can’t call myself a “Social Media Diva” if I don’t give a site like this a fair shot, now can I?

Ask the Editors: How Do You Want to be Pitched and What Has Changed?

From www.highervisibility.com

From Amanda DiSilvestro on Higher Visibility:

I talked with some of the best editors in the SEO and online marketing industry and asked them the following questions:

When a writer emails you about getting involved in your content marketing and contributing content, what is it that you look for in his/her email? Are there specific things you don’t like to see with this type of pitch? Have your standards and thoughts on this subject changed over the last several months?

Ileane Smith:

This is my contribution to the post:

I started accepting guest posts on Basic Blog Tips over 4 years ago and during that time nearly 200 guest authors have contributed content the blog. Most of those bloggers were already on my radar before they approached me about guest posting. I’m active in a number of blogging communities like Blog Engage, Triberr and Social Buzz Club so it’s much easier for members of those communities to connect with me for guest posting outreach. I talk more about my process in this episode of my podcast.

When I get approached by people who use a template email—most of the time I’m not interested. I can always tell when the person hasn’t done their research about me or my blog based on the tone of the email. Of course any email that mentions a “team” of writers gets rejected. Then there are those that are going to provide an article at absolutely no charge or free of charge. I find that type of email very annoying and consider it spam or junk mail.

In the past, the only way I would consider a new guest author is if they left a voice mail for me through my Speakpipe account. That’s a great way to filter out the noise. And I always ask for examples from previous guest posts so I can check their interaction and responses to comments. Something I started doing recently is checking Buzzsumo to search for past articles of potential guests. Just type in “author:author name” to see the results and it does a great job of pulling in their portfolios.
Overall, I’m starting to see a lot more guest posting requests come through from more qualified authors and I find that very refreshing.

7 Social Media Pros Share Little-Known Tips for Social Networking Success

From socialmediaslant.com

Having a hard time figuring out how to make the major social networks work for you? Trust me, I understand! That is the reason why I invited some social media pros to share little-known tips on the...

YouTube analytics is probably one of the most overlooked audience building tools by the vast majority of YouTubers today. There’s a ton of actionable data hiding in those reports. You can find everything from your traffic sources and the age of your viewers all the way to what keywords people are typing in search to find your YouTube videos. YouTube just released a brand new feature that shows real-time traffic reports in your desktop dashboard for your last 5 published videos. Those stats are great to have and it’s wonderful to see how your current promotions are going. But what if you have an older video or 2 that you want to track in real time?

Here’s the tip – from your Analytics dashboard at the top right, you’ll see an option to create video Groups. Now just to be clear, your Groups are different from your playlists. They’re only visible to you and they are only used for tracking purposes. Create a Group with any combination of up to 5 of your older videos to see the real-time stats for those older more popular videos that have a lot of activity and watch the traffic roll in. Here’s a screenshot showing real-time stats from videos I published in 2013 and 2010.”

What Super Engagement Bloggers Say is the Magic Ingredient in Blogging

From worthblogger.com

Blog post at WorthBlogger - Tips for writing a blog worth reading :

Ms Ileane Smith Takes Engagement To Blog Interviewing

Ms Ileane is one of the top female bloggers that have rocked the blogosphere. I have had the privilege of working with her on her blog which gave me an insight of what blog engagement was all about. She values comments as herself and take her time to reply to each an every one of them.

Today, Ms Ileane has taken blog engagement to something more thrilling. She steps out of her comfort zone to Increase Engagement and Build Relationships with Blog Interviews.

Here is what she said in her post:

The reason we all enjoy blog interviews so much is because they are a great example of those successful collaborations I’m so in favor of, and the “engagement” that we all seek to have on our blogs is pretty much built in by nature.

Ms Ileane Offers Some Tips for Great Blog Interviews

Some advice for those of you who are going to be interviewed:

1. Obtain a list of the questions or topics ahead of time
2. Add the interviewer to your list of contacts on Skype, Twitter, Google+ and other networks
3. Make a few notes of key points and people that you want to mention
4. Keep your voice even, and remember to be natural
5. Be sure to smile – so that your voice sounds energetic and upbeat

Ileane Smith:

Yes

Engagement is the new Black.

50 Respected Bloggers Gave Me WRONG Advice On Twitter Marketing. Oops!

From bloggerjet.com

I will probably get beaten real hard for this headline, but at least it should effectively steal your attention (...you will thank me for this very soon). And if you think that this is going to be
Ileane Smith:

My contribution to this group post:

6. Ileane Smith of basicblogtips.com

Most of traffic that comes to my blog from Twitter is the result of my blogging friends sharing my content.

I’m really thankful for all of the relationships that I have built with other bloggers over the years. And I really appreciate that some people have added my blog’s RSS feed into tools like Twitterfeed, Dlvr.it or Autoshare on Triberr.

It really boils down to the fact that they feel confident that I only publish quality content on my blog. It’s key for bloggers to connect with one another and build that trust factor.

I know people like quick results but that kind of trust only comes with time and consistency. You also have to be a giver and I always try to give just as much if not more than I receive.

Thanks for asking the question Tim, because Twitter is one of my top traffic sources and I think it’s important that new bloggers understand what it takes.

What is Blogging?

From angelamccall.com

Seems like the simple word blog became so complicated to some of the minds of todays business owners....

I like medium size. Somehow some blogs when it gets too popular, they stop answering their comments and to me that is not cool. So no matter where you at in your ladder, you should not stop engaging or answering your comments.

Ileane Smith:

My comment:

Hi Angela,

Thanks so much for the mention Angela! I’m so pleased to be on your list.

Disqus Comments vs. CommentLuv & Other Comment Systems

From inspiretothrive.com

Disqus comments are becoming more popular for bloggers today than ever before. Which comment system do you prefer and why? Read what other bloggers say.
Ileane Smith:
Ileane Smith of BasicBlogTips.com
“I’m a big fan of CommentLuv, and in fact there was a time when I worked closely with Andy Bailey as the Official CommentLuv Ambassador. However, I bit off more than I could chew in that role and eventually I had to step down. Around the same time I decided to stop giving “Luv” to my commenters and ending up trying to explain why I made the decision in this post If You Wait for Perfection You Might Miss the Boat I’m still not sure if people understand what I was going through at the time because I believe my situation was somewhat unique. Let me try to explain, although I still use the plugin, I turned off the LUV back in May 2013, yet I continue to get traffic from people who see my blog listed as a DoFollow commenting blog.  It’s pretty frustrating, because even when I did have the LUV turned on, most of the comment links were not DoFollow. So what started off as a beautiful thing turned into a but pain because I spent hours moderating comments every day. I know there were solutions like adding additional plugins but that was the last thing I wanted to do. All in all I don’t regret using CommentLuv, but I do regret the fact that there are so many bots and spammers out there that will do anything for links that in the end are just a big waste of everyone’s time. It’s such a shame that we have to load our blogs down with plugins just to have a normal conversation with a real person.

I never used Disqus comments on my blog so I can’t give you any feedback there. Currently I use the native WordPress commenting system along with Google + comments. As I mentioned in the blog post, it’s not a perfect solution, but it will have to do for now.”  - Ileane Smith.
